Exam periods are usually one of the most busy and tensed periods on campuses as Students will be busy with jacking. Sometimes, you'll practically not get a place to read at night because of the number of filled lecture theatres in universities.
For some of the regular night class people, you can even find them complaining that their favorite spots have been taken in these lecture halls. The spots being talked about here most times are where they can easily charge their phones and use their laptops.
Other times, it’s where can serve as a hideaway from sight for his/her girlfriend/boyfriend as the case may be.
In this article, I have listed 20 types of students you'll find in a typical Nigerian University's Night class. You won’t be surprised to see your behaviour mimicked here, because this writing is a product of a big-time observation.
Well, if you’re not a big fan of night classes, just chill and read what people like me do there. If you’re an aspirant or Fresh Student, enjoy this!
Let me start with my own kind of people;
1. The Serious 'kids'
Every University has these kind of students. These kind of students usually come to night classes with the good intention of dealing with their materials. Most times, they don’t come with anyone not even a female for the guys and they might not come with their phones except if their materials or textbooks are on it.
They usually come with only their materials and hard copy textbooks. They’re not distracted by anything. Every effort is channeled to the books. They stay focused, single-minded and read TDB (TILL DAY BREAK).
2. The lookers:
This category of Students will make sure that they look at any slightest movement around them. If they ever see a beautiful/handsome girl/guy then they will never cease catching a glimpse of them. One will wonder if these people actually came to study or to observe others study. Actually, they didn't.
3. Customer care agents:
These ones are working with MTN and 911. They will keep on receiving calls from the time they come to class till they sleep off. Sometimes, you can't even tell who they are on call with or what they are discussing because they'll use 'bedroom voice'. If you sit beside them "sorry o", you will not be able to concentrate on the books you came to read and they are most times ladies.
4. Monitoring Spirits
As if their buttocks are paining them. They’ll read for a few hours and then start walking around the class. Greeting people and spending huge time talking 'in the nonsense' (irrelevant talks). They wouldn’t allow you to concentrate and achieve anything. They will shake hands with you thousand times. Now and then they’ll go about whinnig everyone who is serious with reading.
5. The Late Comers:
This is common among girls and 'big' boys. When you get to class from 6-9pm, you will discover that the class is almost empty but these late comers will start arriving around 11:30 when their presence will be noticed. Most times, they come in heavily dressed and unnecessarily noisy.
6. The Preachers:
This set of people, sometimes could annoy people reading in night classes but nobody usually picks up courage to talk to them because nobody wants to be tagged enemy of God's word. The worst part is that these preachers come to preach when they are tired of reading and want to stretch themselves.
7. Messi and C. Ronaldo Fans
You’ll imagine if they came to read or to argue who’s the real G.O.A.T. You'll see a guy that would mention the list of players in a club and the other would correct him about the sold ones and how much they were sold, those that’ll play the premier league and players that’ll be benched. Sometimes they talk about how many odds they got in Bet9ja or Nairabet.
8. The itinerant readers:
They are people who move in and out of the reading room every ten minutes. Sometimes you see them walking about the corridors. In extreme cases, they can read in four to six different classes in a night.
9. The unarmed robbers:
Yes I call them unarmed because they look very innocent when they are reading beside you waiting for the operation time. They steal things like phones, reading lamp, purse/wallet, laptops, wrist-watches, textbooks etc depending on the person's level of expertise and stealing intentions.
10. The chronic sleepers.
Hmmmmm, this set of people will just enter the class and lay their face on the desk and sleep off. They will not open their book from the time they come in till the time they will leave. They are always victims of the unarmed robbers above. The bad thing about these people is that they snore without regards and they fart without conscience.
11. The Eaters:

They will buy biscuit, viju milk, lacasera, gala, chewing gum, rice, bread, fearless; in fact, all the snacks in the world just to attend night class. You will wonder if you are in a Nursery class or University
night class. They’ll spend reasonable hours eating. Sometimes they eat while pretending to be reading. Immediately the food finished, next thing you’ll hear is Please wake me when it’s 12 O’Clock” that’ll end the night! They form the highest number of CHAIN_SLEEPERS that won’t realise that they’re not in their bedroom. The male among them snores a big lot.
12. The pingers:
This set of people will never let their phones be. Some will even come with up to three phones. Pressing their phone every now and then that you will wonder if they are actually studying or proof-reading.
13. Politicians
Lol, when they come in the evening you’ll think that their bags are filled with just books and readin lamps but they are coming with campaign items like pens, flyers and likes of them. They won’t allow you to read. Sometimes they’ll come close and tell you why you should vote. One of those nights they would call on everyone’s attention just to say REMEMBER SO SO AND SO NAME!
If no election is around the corner, these politicians will begin political discussions which will most times lead to heated up arguments.
14. Bae/Boo Hunters
If I mention everything without mentioning our guys and babes who come to night class to look for partners (Awon single pringles) then my list is incomplete. This is for people who are single and searching every night. They’ll start with using their bags, books and handkerchiefs to keep seats for nobody in particular. Guys don’t dare sit there. Unfortunate beautiful girls don’t get close too.
When everywhere get calm they’ll start “…seems you’re reading CHE 156? Hope you’re understanding? If you won’t mind I’m kinda good at a few concepts therein!
I’m gonna put you through!” With this strategy and more they’ll get like 5-6 numbers a night.
Hope this is your WhatsApp number?…. I’ll chat you up_”
15. The Couples:
They will come to class together, continue talking, chatting and touching each other until they are tired then off they go. They have gone to night class noni. Sometimes they form jackos, the next minute the girl would place her head on the guy’s thighs. My guy would either be forming Jacko or pressing nothing on his phone. Soon they, (to us) are engrossed in deep sleep. Guy’s hand crossing her…. A TV show is set for students.
By 5:00am he will make sure he sees her off and she gets to her hostel before other guys will start going back to the hostels.
16. The Analysts:
This category of people are always looking for someone to argue with. Every topic is potentially arguable. They always want to make their points. These are the Gani Fawehinmi's.
17. Movie Students
These students will purposely leave the hostel or lodge with their phones, laptops, Bluetooth, and earpiece. They’ll target a socket and colonize it. A whole lot of big world will happen within their ears.
Sometimes you hear “come-on shut that guy”, Gosh-holy sh*t… F*ck you! B*tch, "Oh no! he missed the target”
18. WiFi Users
Since the WiFi is often very strong at the night. Loading more than 10-12mb/s. This set of students will make sure they use Netflix and complete the movie they were downloading during the daytime. They will watch every trending video on Tiktok, Instagram, YouTube, Twitter, Facebook and update all their apps.
When their friends chat with them, they would reply "I’m in night class, just checking stuff on Google, chat with you later. I have an exam tomorrow".
19. Class Gatemen
Seems every class/department has theirs. These students will sit close to the door or most often stand. Once you knock, the next you'll hear is:
“Are you in the Chemistry department"?
"Are you in Pharmacy"?
"This hall is only opened to Techites o!"
"Who did you come with?"
"We don’t allow non members into this class. You have to go to the faculty theatre hall or your hostel reading room”
Before you’ll say ”Please sir my faculty is at UCH” the door is locked before you.
20. Market traders:
Finally on my list, we have the market traders. These are students who take advantage of the fact that it is night and shops won't open and sell things in night classes. Sometimes, we can't call them students because they have no other focus than their business. Maybe they are students but have side hustles.
Thank you for reading! Which of these students are you or can you relate with? Let me know in the comments section.
